DESCRIPTION:
This antique brass pivoted support gimbal made to enable an object to rotate freely along multiple axes whilst maintaining its orientation regardless of its external motion.
The gimbal consists of two rings mounted on axes at right angles to each other. The innermost ring would have held a compass or lamp and pivots within the outer rings which are attached to a decorative base. This setup would allow the compass/lamp to maintain a horizontal position whilst at sea, as the ship pitches and rolls. Decorative marine creatures and seashell designs are included on this gimbal's base, adding aesthetic value to its functional design (these motifs are less common but reflect a maritime theme that was sometimes incorporated into nautical instruments of the late 19th to early 20th centuries).

You may return most new, unopened items within 14 days of delivery for a full refund. We will a pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).
